I met Maria and Percy in deep jungle of Peru. A Spanish-Peruvian couple,
they've moved back to work on Maria's grandmother's farm, NE of Madrid,
in El Burgo de Osma. For the past year, they've raised
sheep in the shadow of Europe's largest castle ruins. They farm also has
a pescafactoria, or trout farm. Set up on a plateau above even Madrid,
it got plenty cold (-10C/+10F) during my visit. I'll spare you the
photos I took of a lamb slaughter, carried by out by one of the
ever-rarer residents still working the land in rural Spain. Maria was
34 weeks pregnant, still working, and has since given birth to a
beautiful daughter, Laia. Oh yeah, El Burgo also has a cathedral in
the old town - why most visit.
