Ringing in 2008 at 2400m on an Alp

Thank god for Italians. I was plan-less for New Year's Eve, when out of the
goodness of her heart, Elena invited me to join a group of intrepid group
of seven from Milan to pass 2007 at a mountain refuge at 2400m (8000ft).
All I needed was crampons.. and the story pretty much wrote itself.
The lodge -- Rifugio Luigi Brioschi -- perched precariously on the tippy tip
of Gringna, a local Alp standout. Included in the evening: 6 course Italian dinner,
red wine a-flowin', spumante (champagne) and pannetone at midnight, and
40 drunk, singing, raucous Italians. From our penthouse, we could see the
flashbombs in Milan, and (from above) the fullscale fireworks launched over Lake Como.
The Alpi.. they aren't the tallest in the world, but they can
make a hell of a first impression..
